Immerse yourself in a unique experience as we explore the historic grounds of Ellis Island, where countless immigrants began their journey to a new life in America.

The Healthcare of Immigrants Tour is led by one of our veteran guides, Denise Giachetta-Ryan.  Denise is a former CUNY professor and Chair of the Department of Nursing.  She has also served as Assistant Vice President of Perioperative Services at two New York City hospitals. This tour is perfect for healthcare professionals, history buffs, genealogists, legal scholars, or anyone curious about history, immigration, public health, and the medical care provided at Ellis Island in the early 20th century. All are welcome!

During this tour, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Gain insights into the medical history of Ellis Island and the crucial role played by nurses in the care of immigrants during the period of peak immigration.

  • Review key diseases and strategies used to ensure treatment and prevent contagion.

  • Tour the abandoned hospital buildings, witnessing the challenges faced by both patients and medical staff.

Attendees need to purchase their own ferry tickets.  Ferry Tickets are sold separately on Statue City Cruises’ website, under ticket option, select: General Admission. Please purchase tickets for the 9 am ferry. Arrive at least one hour earlier for security check.
